Moral Decadence in China due to capitalism, rising materialism and wealth?

UPDATE: 2 year old baby has died – Click here

Yueyue, a 2-year-old, moments before she is hit by a truck in Foshan City in China

I’ve heard some Chinese Americans tell me that the Chinese people tend to be selfish and not altruistic. They tend to be self-absorbed and willing to scrutinize and judge other Chinese rather than help them. They tend to look at other Chinese as competition rather than have the common unified sense of community.

So when I read this horrible story, it reminded me of the things that several Chinese people have told me, here on this site and in person from friends, acquintances, etc. It was basically a hit and run by 2 vehicles and the hapless victim was a 2 year old baby. No one helped the baby who was lying in a pool of blood and now the baby is brain dead now and will most likely die. At least a dozen people just walked around the baby!

This incident has sparked a focus on the supposedly declining moral values of Chinese society due to capitalism, money, profits, materialism, and overall increase in affluence. There is a public outrage at the very public who failed to help.

Is it fair to blame materialism, increasing wealth, and money for this type of behavior. Certainly, this has been known to occur in the already prosperous U.S. but it usually compromises of victims who are the homeless.

I was told that the Chinese are notorious for not looking out for other fellow Chinese people. That they only look out for themselves and that they like to see other Chinese fail so they can feel better about themselves. And all this was told by a Chinese person! Is this true? Do you agree? Is this a form of Asian on Asian crime?

I got stereotyped by a dumb white waitress! Damn!

waitress I got stereotyped by a dumb white waitress! Damn!

"Recommendations? Since you're Asian, I'm sure you'll love our teriyaki burger!"

Recently I went to a trendy burger joint with a bunch of buddies for lunch.  There were about six of us including two East Asians, a half Asian, a Hispanic guy, a Hispanic guy, and a token white guy.  Looking at the menu, I decided I wanted to be daring and try the burger with the habanero pepper mayo.  For those who don’t know, the habanero pepper is one of the spiciest on the planet, being thousands of times hotter than the jalapeno.  But, I really wanted to try it.  When the waitress came to take our orders, I was still unsure if I wanted to try the burger or not because it was after all habanero!  But, I was thinking perhaps they took the flavor of habanero and infused it into this mayo to make it tasty but still edible.

So, it was my turn as she went around the table.  She was a young Caucasian waitress in her early 20s.

“So, what do you want”, she asked.
“I want the burger with the habanero mayo on it.  But, I’m a little worried.  How spicy is the habanero mayo?”  Her response was really unexpected, and very strange.
“You’re Asian, I’m sure you can handle it”, she said! Continue reading

I’m fed up with Hollywood using Asian stereotypes for cheap laughs

2brokegirls1 Im fed up with Hollywood using Asian stereotypes for cheap laughs

"Short asexual Asian man with heavy Engrish accent"

I wanted to vent and rant about something that constantly keeps coming up and it’s just getting really annoying. Negative Asian male stereotypes. I experienced a couple of unappealing things in the course of 1 day while hanging out at home one night watching TV.

(1) I was watching TV one day and there was this reality show where there are 2 hot white girls inside a house and one by one, a guy rings the doorbell. The girls view the guys who are outside the front door via a camera and they judge whether they can come in or not – worthy enough to meet the hot girls inside. One of the guys happens to be an Asian guy and this is what the girls commented: “Uh, he looks a little short”, “I wonder if the rest of him fits his short height”, “Sorry William Hung but you’re just not hung enough for me”.

2brokegirls4 Im fed up with Hollywood using Asian stereotypes for cheap laughs

For most people this may be funny to them but for me, it’s annoying and completely aggravating. People tell me to chill out and just not worry about it. And I try. But this kind of shit always pops up as I live and go through my daily life. I don’t look for it or seek it. I am bombarded on a daily basis by these kinds of things. And one of the biggest source of this the damn TV, which I sometimes watch.

(2) There was another TV show called “2 Broke Girls” – In it, the diner where the 2 broke girls work at is owned by a tiny short Asian guy. He’s deathly afraid of GIRLS – he’s shy, timid, and comes across as being asexual. I get it, the character is a Asian nerd who’s afraid of girls and acts like he’s some prudis childish imbecile. There is an ounce of sexuality brooding within him and he comes across as lacking any sort of sexual quality. And his character is not gay. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not some prude uptight Asian guy who don’t have a sense of humor. I actually liked the show. But why does Hollywood have to go there and make those cheap shots at the expense of Asians? It’s the same old tired story.

So what is it? Why does an Asian guy have to be portrayed that he is asexual, short, have a small penis, and not interested in sex or girls? I am not short, asexual, afraid of girls, and have a small penis. And I know many other Asian guys who are tall, sexual, love girls and sex, and have big penises….haha – joking!

2brokegirls3 Im fed up with Hollywood using Asian stereotypes for cheap laughs

The same Asian character in “2 Broke Girls” had a heavy Asian accent. I looked this up – The Asian actor can speak English fluently yet he speaks in a broken English accent on the show. This is unnerving and really gets me angry. It seems almost every Asian on TV or movie has the Asian accent. What does that say about Hollywood?

And to top it all off, one the girl characters on the show says “You can’t tell an Asian he made a mistake. He’ll go in back and throw himself on a sword…” – Oh wow!

As an Asian man or even an Asian girl, don’t you get tired of seeing and hearing these negative stereotypes projected and broadcasted all over the TV and the media in general? Does this not bother you at all? Asian men have to realize that many non-Asian and even other Asians buy into these stereotypes and start to believe they are truths.

The cast of '2 Broke Girls' (See far left)

One writer on a blog wrote this and I can’t disagree more:

The two work at a greasy spoon diner in the thick of hipsterville and they have a Korean boss (played by Matthew Moy) with what seems to be a stereotypical portrayal of an Asian: broken English, dorky Osh Kosh B’Gosh for adults wardrobe, and a wide-eyed naive view of America. In other words, a FOB. Way harsh, right? Not necessarily.

My love for the show aside, there have been rumblings of Asian Americans getting ready to attack the show for its Long Duk Dong tendencies, but after watching the show, I would like to politely ask Asian Americans to retract their fists of fury.

Sure, there are details of Moy’s character that would immediately make all of us go into militant mode. For instance, Moy’s character’s name is Han Lee, but he opts to Americanize his name by calling himself “Bryce Lee.” You can look at these two ways: 1.) Offensive because it degrades an iconic name in Asian culture or 2.) Funny because it is a social commentary on how immigrants change their names at a moment’s notice. I opt for the latter because there is no need to waste energy on yet another Bruce Lee joke. Yes, Bruce Lee is an icon and the very fact that they are parodying his name is testimony to that. And imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, no? Plus, the use “Bruce Lee as a gag” is the same ol’ rhetoric that we have been beating like a dead water buffalo for years. In the right context, it isn’t offensive. Half the time, we make a point for it to be offensive.

Other than the name and the exaggerated look of Moy’s character, there really isn’t any other reason to waste energy over complaining about Bryce Lee. With the screen time he has, Moy owns the role. He doesn’t degrade it. It would be a totally different story if they had him using an abacus in each scene or constantly eating kimchi or worse — driving a Honda with a ridiculous body kit and/or building the foundation for K-Town 2.0.

Plus, the show is a sitcom — a “situation comedy.” It’s supposed to be funny. But if you insist on getting frowning upon Moy’s character, then you might as well throw in their stereotypical portrayal of Earl (Garrett Morris), a cool-as-hell black man with a “jive” accent, the dirty and misogynistic Russian cook Oleg (Jonathan Kite), the jabs taken at Russian mobsters, the preconceived notions about high society, and finally the horrible attacks made upon hipsters wearing knit beanies.

Pump it up my Asian brothers: Benefits of Lifting Weights

Rain ninja 300x201 Pump it up my Asian brothers: Benefits of Lifting Weights

Look like this and nobody will mess with you

We really appreciate your comments, and we learn a lot from them.  Some of our readers say they’ve experienced racism, while others say they haven’t.  Why is it that some people are targeted while others are not?  There have been several instances where a reader will mention they have never been victimized by racists because they happen to be very tall or muscular.

Racists are cowards and target those who they perceive as weak.  Asians in white media are often portrayed as wimps, and so a lot of Americans get the notion that it’s safe to pick on the Asian guys.  Oftentimes since Asian parents emphasize education over sports and socializing, a lot of Asian American guys can be scrawny in comparison to the average American kids who can’t count to ten but can catch a football.

How can you avoid getting picked on?  One answer is to get stronger and bigger by lifting weights. There are many benefits to this.  You get stronger so that you can protect yourself in case a punk ass provokes you.  When you get physically stronger, you get more confident in your social life.  It’s definitely true that if you feel good about yourself, you tend to radiate that.  But, the best thing about gaining some muscle is that it will intimidate the racists, and they will avoid giving you trouble.  They will look at your physique, think twice, and move on to easier prey.

I think a lot of Asians do not do weight training.  Although Asians are just as active in sports, many of them just don’t lift.  My dad was a muscular guy, but I never saw him weight train.  He did stuff like push ups, sit ups, boxing, and running to stay in shape.  The traditional martial arts like Karate or Taekwondo work the body by doing drills and training that uses the weight of the body.  They rarely involve lifting heavy metal.  Also, I think that many Asians like myself thought that Asian guys genetically can’t get that muscular and bulky.  But the more research I do, I realize this is false.

Michael Chang of SixPackShortcuts

I came across this guy on YouTube recently, and was thoroughly impressed.  He is well-spoken, confident, intelligent, ripped, and he has a great system for gaining muscle and strength while losing weight.  His name is Mike Chang , and he went from being obese to getting ripped through lifting weights, studying the body, and eating smart.  He did so well that he became a full time personal trainer, and created Six Pack Shortcuts online.  He is an Asian American guy who is shattering all the stereotypes we face.  I think he’s a great role model.

Candace Kita - Actor and women’s safety advocate, Author of “The Hottie Handbook: A Girl’s Guide to Safety." As a safety specialist, Candace has been interviewed by People, Good Morning America, Jay Leno Show, Inside Edition, Los Angeles Times, 48 Hours, the LOGO Network and WHO Australia

I read Candace Kita’s article “Angry Asian Man” on www.asiancemagazine.com and felt compelled to write a response to the many points she made in it. I agree with some of the things that she was saying but highly disagreed with others. At any rate, it’s a good article in that it brings up key topics and subject matter, many of which we often discuss on our site here. She’s a great writer with lots of good insight and of course they are from the perspective of an Asian American woman.

Are half-Asian people generally more attractive than full-Asian people?

икони на светци

halfasian1 242x300 Are half Asian people generally more attractive than full Asian people?

"I am that much hotter because my dad is white"

So all my life, I’ve heard this comment numerous times from many people – “Their kids are going to be really cute with a white dad and Asian mom.” Is this true? Are Amerasian kids cuter or more attractive than full Asian kids? Why do so many people, both Non-Asians and Asians, think that?

So I tried to think back and determine if I knew or knew of or seen any half-Asian people who were very attractive. I do remember a few who were very attractive, mostly half-Asian girls. For guys, it’s harder for me to determine or judge but not a whole lot. But my own personal experiences dictate that my results are inconclusive. If that’s the case, how come so many people have said this to me and think it.

Even with celebrities I do not believe this to be true. In fact, if you look at the full Asian celebrities who are popular in Asia, they are much more attractive than the half-Asian celebrities from the U.S. and other parts of the world. I just don’t see it.

Whenever someone says “Half-Asian kids are cuter than full-Asian kids” or “Their kids are going to really cute because the dad is white and the girl is Asian”, it always catches me off guard. I hear this in greater frequency when the interracial couple consist of an attractive white man with an attractive Asian woman. Can equally attractive Asian man and woman not produce attractive offsprings as well?

Also, I’ve heard people say that the reason why half-Asians babies will grow up to be good looking is because they will be taller as if the increased height can be attributed automatically to the white man’s gene. They just assume that half-Asian kids will be more likely to be not as tall compared to half-Asian kids. This really baffles me and I just don’t get it.

halfasian2 Are half Asian people generally more attractive than full Asian people?

"Thank goodness for my white dad for I do not have chinky slanty eyes"

I’ve even heard some Asian girls express their interest in marrying a white guy so their kids can be cuter. WTF? Does this imply that the Asian-ness somehow is a handicap or genetically diminished when it comes to breeding and producing offsprings? Geez, what am I some kind of Asian freak? I got 1 word for y’all…John Gossellin of “John & Kate Plus 8″! Barf!

Or, do people just mean that the unique mix of Asian and white make a person more attractive because of the brownish hair, brown eyes, etc? Hey, I’ve seen very pretty half-Asian girls and I’ve seen some f’ed up looking half-Asian girls as well so this generalization is beyond my comprehension. What do you think? Have you ever heard people make such generalizations of half-Asian kids and adults?

Chinese basketball team start a brawl with Georgetown: A Lesson for Asian men

My first reaction when I heard about the brawl between the Chinese basketball team and Georgetown in an exhibition match was, “Oh, there the American punk ass athletes go again causing trouble!”  But, it turns out that the brawl was instigated by the Chinese team, which was comprised of belligerent military guys according to the Washington Post.

From the perspective of an Asian American, we could learn from these Chinese thugs.  The mentality of these players, although belligerent, display a level of Asian pride and power that a lot of us living in white societies lack.  These guys refused to take shit from anyone, and they weren’t intimidated by the fact that the Hoyas were American and black and tall and strong.  Although their actions may have disgraced their team and country, it sends a message to the world that the Chinese athletes aren’t gonna take shit from nobody, especially on home court!  From a racial perspective, it is actually an empowering message.  I have never seen a group of Asians fighting a group of blacks or whites without fear like that.  Can you think of any other examples like this? Asian women rarely fall victims to racism and prejudice compared to Asian men

???????????

racismgender1 256x300 Asian women rarely fall victims to racism and prejudice compared to Asian men

"This hardly happens to Asian women"

So I wanted to bring up a topic that I’ve noticed recently. It seems to me that as far as racism, bigotry, or prejudice, Asian women have far less been subject to these things than Asian men. A good example of this is when I was growing up, having just arrived to America, I had to start going to elementary school in a predominantly white neighborhood…the valleys in Cali. And wow, kids can be mean! Or just really honest. Either way, it was a traumatic period in my life and to this day, I think back on it and cringe. Most of Asian American friends (guys only) have gone through the same type of experiences. But the Asian American girls…they have not.

I’ve learned that racism is much more prevalent for Asian men than Asian women. I’ve also learned that racist behavior is done more by non-Asian men than non-Asian women. Perhaps there are just as many racist women out there as racist men but men just tend to be more open, vocal, upfront whereas the women hide it more, keep it to themselves, and publicize it less.
