I wish my Asian dad was more like Mr. Huxtable

Look! Its the Huxtables! Hes a doctor, and shes a lawyer!

Look! It's the Huxtables! He's a doctor, and she's a lawyer!

“Look! It’s the Huxtables! He’s a doctor and she’s a lawyer! And Theo is NOT on parole! I love TV!

This is interesting. The stereotypical Asian dad is one who’s quiet, subdued, unemotional, detached, stern, and aloof. This is sort of an exaggeration I’ll admit but I’ve heard from many Asian guys who said that they wish their dad was more of a friend, more buddy-like, or more of a dad who is talkative, understanding, and emotionally present. A good example that’s relevant to me is Heathcliff Huxtable from the Cosby Show. This father was the best. He’d talk to his son Theo like a friend or pal but still represented that strong ideal father figure. Most of my friends who are Asian had similar experiences growing up in an Asian household. The dynamics of the Asian father with their son was drastically different qualitatively from their white friends. Read the rest of this entry »

“Put down the Sushi girl…I just took Viagra and I’m ready to rock and roll…like a rock star!”

Typically, in Asian culture, respect for the elders (senior citizens), such as grandmothers and grandfathers, is very important. In Korean, we change the entire way of speaking when talking and addressing to an elder. It consists of a more formalized language that’s indicative of respect. When I was in Korea, you give up your seat in the subway when an elder is present. You bow and never call them out by saying “hey!” You open doors and never smoke in their presence. When you are drinking beer, you turn to the right and then drink. You should pour the drink for them with both hands. You definitely don’t curse or utter profanities in front of them. You don’t talk over them or talk to them as if they are beneath you.

But in American culture, it seems the older generations get treated like shit sometimes. There seems to be no respect. They are sometimes viewed as a nuisance because they are slow drivers on the road. It seems they are forgotten and turned away by society. I’ve seen people yell, scream, and curse in front of their grandparents. If you’re Asian, you have to agree with me that the idea of respect for the elders is more prevalent and important amongst Asians than the general American population. The “oldies” in America, such as the aging baby boomers, are considered old fashion and passé. They are not viewed as wise and full of life with lots of fascinating stories. What do you think?

A difficult task in a SAM’s existence is the time we have to kick it on the dance floor. It’s not gonna make or break us. Sometimes I wonder: is it worth trying a new move or is it better to stick to our own bread and butter motions?

Your Honor, if crappy dancing is a crime, I am guilty as charged.

It would be good to get feedback from women about dancing errors that SAMs make. What is the worst thing we can do on a dance floor?

“AGH! Asian men are so gross! BARF!”

Controversy…that’s what I am and that’s what I’m about. And I attract it somehow. So this white chick wrote me a nasty email. You have to read it for yourself. Basically…she wants me. But she can’t have me. Because I’m made of gold baby. You feeling me? Read her email below…it’s very very…loving and sentimental. I think she’s a fan. At any rate, tell us what you think on what she’s saying. Take it all in and vent. And soon thereafter, I will post her response to the email I wrote the ho. But kidding aside, just read this but don’t shy away from it. I know it’s disturbing and not something you want to hear. But this is reality and we need to face it and do something about it. I’m not trying to rip on Asians here – I’m Asian. This sort of thing infuriates me. I’m trying to show on this platform that there are people out there who think this way and we shouldn’t ignore it.

Asian men are thought off as weak nerdy small penised and gross because THEY ARE. I worked with gooks in three different companies. I was a director of sales for three large PC hardware manufacturers YOU HAVE HEARD OF. We were an all white sales team to put an American face on GOOK imported CRTs and a famous brand of video cards. I worked for Taiwanese, Koreans and Chinese from Hong Kong. They were ALL gross. I never hated asians till I got to know them. I had girlfriends in boarding school who I loved like sisters from Hong Kong and Korea and Japan. I still write to them. I was never prejudice till I saw what these people, specifically the men, were really like. The better I got to know them the more they disgusted me. I can tell you story after story of experiences I had that were UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE. Things American men NEVER would have done in an AMERICAN company. Want me to lecture your group on how stupid and gross asian men are and all the things I saw first hand that proved it to me? Id be happy to. But seriously man, how stupid and pathetic and desperate do you have to be to join a group and have meeting to try to get YOUR OWN WOMEN interested in YOU? Or even more pathetic “to GET WHITE CHICKS”. You and your ridiculous racist ad are proof on a small scale of just how stupid gross and creepy asian guys are. You want white chicks, throw your self into oncoming trffic and get reincarnated as a cute white guy or cute latino. THAT is how YOU guys can get a hot white chick that you didnt have to pay to take her clothes off…

I don’t think most men care whether boobs are fake or not. That always surprised and disappointed me. You seem mostly concerned with whether you are going to be taken in. Why? What does it mean to you if the boobs are fake? I’m curious. I guess you are assigning virtue to the best real boobs. How is that a virtue, when it’s all up to chance, anyway? Personally, I have a lot of respect for the flat actresses who remain flat in defiance of the implants trend of the last 25 years. And then there are actresses who are totally honest and even proud of their fake boobs. Does that get any points with you, Big China? Personally, I think fake boobs are an abomination except maybe for mastectomy patients. Women ruin their health with cosmetic surgery, and then the presence of the boobs in the media as well as their increasing presence among regular people skews people’s ideas of what’s okay and makes women who want to stay natural feel more pressured.

I used to be against fake boobs until I went to a strip club and had a pair rubbed into my face. At that point, it didn’t matter much anymore…because I was in heaven. Boobs are boobs. But, I don’t think I could marry somebody with fake boobs because it sends me a message about their personality. It tells me that they may have confidence issues, are probably high maintenance, probably superficial, and have problems accepting themselves for who they are. There are constant challenges in life that test your limits and abilities, and many times you will feel lacking in something. How is a person going to face those challenges if he/she feels the solution is to go and buy/get another one? Read the rest of this entry »

Got plans this weekend?
icon1 Well Adjusted SAM | icon2 | icon4 10 27th, 2006| icon339 Comments »

So for the past couple of weekends I’ve been either doing housework or working like a good little SAM.  Screw that.  Here’s what’s on tap for me this weekend:

  • Halloween party tonight…my buddy’s girlfriend’s sister (non-asian) is in a band and playing at a bar tonight.  It’s a Halloween costume event and I don’t have the foggiest what to wear…For the past couple of years I’ve been Zorro as that’s the world’s easiest costume.  My other buddy said I should go as Steve Irwin and put a barb on my chest…jeez…
  • Habitat for Humanity event tomorrow morning…I figure it’ll learn me some new skillz in construction and house maintenance…I’d love to learn how to put in a dishwasher actually.
  • Girlfriend and I are going hiking.  I spent a shit load on camping/hiking equipment at the last REI sale…might as well put it to good use.
  • My eBay auctions expire on Sunday so I guess I should ship them out.
  • Going to go try to see Last King of Scotland…heard it was supposed to be good.

What are you kids doing this weekend?

“Asso! Asso! I play an Asian better than an Oriental.”

One of greatest movies is “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Yes, I was in love with Audrey Hepburn and that movie did it for me. I first saw it when I was in high school. Then I saw it again during college and this time, it pissed me off. For those of you who have seen it, you may know what I’m taking about. Mickey Rooney plays a Japanese and mocks a heavy accent with buck teeth in Japanese attire. He typified Charlie Chan. It was meant to be funny but it wasn’t funny at all. It is so profoundly offensive and annoying. If you watch it now, it’s just aggravating. It was so highly offensive on so many levels. Granted, times were different in the 50’s but dude…watch it again and your jaws will drop. It was common back in the day for white people to play Asian characters in movies. Marlon Brando did the same thing. And before then, white people played black people. And before that, men played women in the Shakespearen days.

You see, I hate it when Hollywood does not remain true to the ethnic and culture factors. Most recently, you had both Zhang Ziyi and Michele Yeo, both Chinese play Japanese characters in “Memoirs of a Geisha”. Hollywood today does this shit all the time. To them it doesn’t matter because white people think we all look alike. Why couldn’t they get Japanese actresses to play these characters? This is the very reason why I lost interest in wanting to see this movie. Why doesn’t Hollywood respect and appreciate the differences and the uniqueness of the culture and ethnicity of each Asian race? I mean, thank God, they actually hired real Koreans in “Mash” and “Lost”. To me, because I’m Asian, each Asian culture is so diverse, so different from each other, and so unique. Maybe they can’t tell what we are and we all look alike, but I can tell and it annoys me when I’m watching Law & Order and there’s fucking Thai actors playing a Korean grocer. Until Hollywood and mainstream media starts to respect and recognize and showcase each Asian culture as unique, the majority whites just won’t get it and they’ll continue to say, “All you’ll look alike”.

The word “Oriental”…is it offensive to you when one refers to you as such? I’ve been called this indirectly and directly several times in the past several years. One time, I was in class lecture and the instructor said “Oriental” to refer to Asians. Good thing he didn’t look at me when he said it because I would’ve smacked him. Well, maybe not, but the funny thing is that nobody in the classroom noticed it except me. Granted, I was the only Oriental in the classroom. Were the non-Orientals not aware or do they just not care? Is this word really offensive? I mean, do I personally care? Uhh…not really. I think it’s kind of silly that I’m being referred to as some sort of object like a piece of furniture or rug. But whatever. I did have one dude ask me if I spoke Oriental and he was totally serious. That was a riot. I told him of course I can…I’m Orientese and I was born in the Orient and that makes me Oriental…motherfucker! I think the majority of the guilty parties are of an older age/generation. Nevertheless I think most people know that this word is not exactly politically correct and can be deemed offensive to Orientals in general. I swear the next time someone calls me Oriental, I’m going to refer to them as…American? White? Shit, there isn’t an equivalent for “Oriental” for them is there? Damnit. At any rate, I have to decide now whether I prefer to be called an “Oriental” or “China Man”. You know what? What we need to do is have this O-word to be like the N-word for Blacks. Shit Oriental, never mind. What do you guys think? Do you get offended? Has this ever happened to you? What did you do?
