"Short asexual Asian man with heavy Engrish accent"

I wanted to vent and rant about something that constantly keeps coming up and it’s just getting really annoying. Negative Asian male stereotypes. I experienced a couple of unappealing things in the course of 1 day while hanging out at home one night watching TV.

(1) I was watching TV one day and there was this reality show where there are 2 hot white girls inside a house and one by one, a guy rings the doorbell. The girls view the guys who are outside the front door via a camera and they judge whether they can come in or not – worthy enough to meet the hot girls inside. One of the guys happens to be an Asian guy and this is what the girls commented: “Uh, he looks a little short”, “I wonder if the rest of him fits his short height”, “Sorry William Hung but you’re just not hung enough for me”.

2brokegirls4 Im fed up with Hollywood using Asian stereotypes for cheap laughs

For most people this may be funny to them but for me, it’s annoying and completely aggravating. People tell me to chill out and just not worry about it. And I try. But this kind of shit always pops up as I live and go through my daily life. I don’t look for it or seek it. I am bombarded on a daily basis by these kinds of things. And one of the biggest source of this the damn TV, which I sometimes watch.

(2) There was another TV show called “2 Broke Girls” – In it, the diner where the 2 broke girls work at is owned by a tiny short Asian guy. He’s deathly afraid of GIRLS – he’s shy, timid, and comes across as being asexual. I get it, the character is a Asian nerd who’s afraid of girls and acts like he’s some prudis childish imbecile. There is an ounce of sexuality brooding within him and he comes across as lacking any sort of sexual quality. And his character is not gay. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not some prude uptight Asian guy who don’t have a sense of humor. I actually liked the show. But why does Hollywood have to go there and make those cheap shots at the expense of Asians? It’s the same old tired story.

So what is it? Why does an Asian guy have to be portrayed that he is asexual, short, have a small penis, and not interested in sex or girls? I am not short, asexual, afraid of girls, and have a small penis. And I know many other Asian guys who are tall, sexual, love girls and sex, and have big penises….haha – joking!

2brokegirls3 Im fed up with Hollywood using Asian stereotypes for cheap laughs

The same Asian character in “2 Broke Girls” had a heavy Asian accent. I looked this up – The Asian actor can speak English fluently yet he speaks in a broken English accent on the show. This is unnerving and really gets me angry. It seems almost every Asian on TV or movie has the Asian accent. What does that say about Hollywood?

And to top it all off, one the girl characters on the show says “You can’t tell an Asian he made a mistake. He’ll go in back and throw himself on a sword…” – Oh wow!

As an Asian man or even an Asian girl, don’t you get tired of seeing and hearing these negative stereotypes projected and broadcasted all over the TV and the media in general? Does this not bother you at all? Asian men have to realize that many non-Asian and even other Asians buy into these stereotypes and start to believe they are truths.

The cast of '2 Broke Girls' (See far left)

One writer on a blog wrote this and I can’t disagree more:

The two work at a greasy spoon diner in the thick of hipsterville and they have a Korean boss (played by Matthew Moy) with what seems to be a stereotypical portrayal of an Asian: broken English, dorky Osh Kosh B’Gosh for adults wardrobe, and a wide-eyed naive view of America. In other words, a FOB. Way harsh, right? Not necessarily.

My love for the show aside, there have been rumblings of Asian Americans getting ready to attack the show for its Long Duk Dong tendencies, but after watching the show, I would like to politely ask Asian Americans to retract their fists of fury.

Sure, there are details of Moy’s character that would immediately make all of us go into militant mode. For instance, Moy’s character’s name is Han Lee, but he opts to Americanize his name by calling himself “Bryce Lee.” You can look at these two ways: 1.) Offensive because it degrades an iconic name in Asian culture or 2.) Funny because it is a social commentary on how immigrants change their names at a moment’s notice. I opt for the latter because there is no need to waste energy on yet another Bruce Lee joke. Yes, Bruce Lee is an icon and the very fact that they are parodying his name is testimony to that. And imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, no? Plus, the use “Bruce Lee as a gag” is the same ol’ rhetoric that we have been beating like a dead water buffalo for years. In the right context, it isn’t offensive. Half the time, we make a point for it to be offensive.

Other than the name and the exaggerated look of Moy’s character, there really isn’t any other reason to waste energy over complaining about Bryce Lee. With the screen time he has, Moy owns the role. He doesn’t degrade it. It would be a totally different story if they had him using an abacus in each scene or constantly eating kimchi or worse — driving a Honda with a ridiculous body kit and/or building the foundation for K-Town 2.0.

Plus, the show is a sitcom — a “situation comedy.” It’s supposed to be funny. But if you insist on getting frowning upon Moy’s character, then you might as well throw in their stereotypical portrayal of Earl (Garrett Morris), a cool-as-hell black man with a “jive” accent, the dirty and misogynistic Russian cook Oleg (Jonathan Kite), the jabs taken at Russian mobsters, the preconceived notions about high society, and finally the horrible attacks made upon hipsters wearing knit beanies.

SAM, I complained about the Matt Moy dude with Jen from Disgrasian.com http://disgrasian.com/2011/09/disgrasian-of-the-weak-2-broke-girls-bryce-lee/

I doubt this guy is 17 years old and perhaps he is 10 years older like 27 years old. Do a dossier back ground check on this guy on youtube and google and you will find he has done the quirky Asian guy roles on several series. Hate him or love his looks, but he is the new Masi Oka, William Hung go to Asian boy and should not be representative of Asian men. Yeah he may fit the stereotype of “Short asexual Asian man with heavy Engrish accent”, but give other shorter Asian guys credit. Not all good men are over 6 feet and masculine. I am 5’7″ and cool, masculine and attractive to other women.

  2. Controversial SAM says:

It’s just so annoying. We’ve taken steps back with showcasing an Asian character like this on a widely watched TV show on a major network. I mean, don’t get me wrong – It’s hard to blame the guy for picking up whatever roles (work) he can find or is offered. But still. It’s pathetic.

I’m not saying all Asian men are short or they’re lame. I’m saying that I get tired of Asian men being stereotyped as all being short. I’m 6ft tall and when I tell white people that, they don’t believe me. It’s ridic!

I’m so glad you complained about the Moy dude on Disgrasian.com. Nice work! It’s just that much more awesome to get the word out about this. Bring awareness.

  3. Shanghai Meimi says:

Ugh, well one more reason to give that show a skip. That what’s her face who is behind this and another new show has been called the new Sarah Silverman – so more entitled, oblivious white chicks whose “humor” consists of tired old racist cliches. It is so frustrating, in what is otherwise a great time for funny women in film and television, with things like 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, and Bridesmaids, it has also slicked the way for such unfunny hacks as this.

I love Community, but hate the character of Chang, played by the eternal sell out Ken Leung.

On other fronts though there has been a lot of improvement on other shows. Half the cast of Hawaii 5-0 is APA, including Daniel Dae Kim (and his abs), Grace Park, and the smoking hot hapa Mark Dacascos as the main baddie. Nikita is a great platform for the fabulous Maggie Q. It seems like comedy is a bleaker landscape than action/drama, but we do have Harry Shum Jr. (and his abs) on Glee. Oh and Kal Penn’s now on How I Met Your Mother. A lot more banana cake eye candy on TV, although still not nearly enough.

  4. melektaus says:

Moy has a history of these kinds of roles.

i agree with ur post, im not asian but my gf is and so are my kids, well half asian half white, but apparently Chinese blood is thick lol. Stereotypes are every where man :/ just like people have asked why me and my gf are together/have been together for so long, do i have an asian female fetish, or is she with me cuz im a rich white guy? well people never seem to stop and think and its prolly cuz WERE IN LOVE, shes the most beautiful girl i have ever met in my whole life.

back on topic more-so, but me and my gf was just talking about this, hollywood does make asians out to look/seem stupid when in fact probably the smartest race out there is asians, most of the asian people we know even ones not born here can speak english very well. And they basicaly take asian culture and rip on it and make a joke out of it, “You can’t tell an Asian he made a mistake. He’ll go in back and throw himself on a sword…”, thats why we dont buy into this stereotypical trash hollywood vomits out their mouths every so often. I want my kids to be proud of being part asian and white, not watching tv and thinking its wrong to be one of the two. anyways im totally behind u on this, all i can say is i wish more people would stop watching this trash so shows like this and others using stereotypes for comiedic relief would stop being aired at all.

    Marc,
Why don’t you propose and marry her if you say you known her long time and love her? Man you are creating a stereotype right there. Too many guys raised in US or western way want to follow some liberal lifestyle and have their cake and eat it too in a relationship with no formal commitment or ring. Or some excuse like she wants me for a green card residence in the States. Some guys see it as to have an open relationship and also see other women on the side. Even though I don’t agree with it, I am now having more respect for the recent legal marriages of gay couples here in the States. I intend to marry my girlfriend within 6 months to show my love and commitment in marriage.

  7. Quanman says:

I totally agree about the Han character in Two Broke Girls. He’s the worst Asian male stereotype since Long Duk Dong in Sixteen Candles. I can’t believe this kind of racist stuff is still being perpetuated by CBS. Why are the networks so scared about showing a strong handsome Asian American male?

  8. JFK says:

@DMan and Marc: The first thing I noticed in reading Marc’s post was that they are unmarried but have kids. I don’t know exactly why that struck with me. But it seems it was similar to DMan’s thinking. For me, almost any Asian person I know, they are quite traditional in that they marry their kid’s father/mother. So no kids out of wedlock. that’s my world, that’s my environment. So it struck me when Marc mentioned about his kids with his Asian girlfriend.

@Marc, is your GF asian american or asian recently from Asia? Why not married? I’m not judging you based on moral grounds or values here. Just curious. I am very curious to find out why she, as an Asian, has agreed to have kids out of wedlock. you see, there’s a double standard here – if she had done this with an Asian man, the entire family and community would shun her to a degree. But if she had done this with a white man, it’s more acceptable or less bad. this is not a personal judgement on my part. I’m just asking because of my own experiences and environment.

  9. JFK says:

@Quanman – I agree. I mean, it sucks cuz i do like the show, but I HATE HATE HATE the Asian character on it. Whenever the Asian guy speaks in his broken engrish, it kills me. I hate the actor, i hate the character, i hate the show, and i hate the network for airing it. I hate the writers, the cast, and everyone else affiliated with the show and anyone who thinks the asian accent is funny.

The actor can speak fluent English but he’s been downgraded to speak in that stupid asian broken accent and it’s just so pathetic. it saddens me that it’s come to this. we’re in 2011 and this is the state of it all. I just can’t understand why the network can’t have an Asian character speak normal English and be attractive, tall, and normal!!!!

  10. mathew moy says:

I detest so much about the Asian character for 2 reasons:
    1) he’s very very short
    2) he has a heavy accent

WHY? I hate this. They showcase the character in the worst possible light. The worst. It’s like the character is not even a person but more of a caricature.

  11. ControSAM says:

    @shanghai meimi:

Good point you brought up on other more favorable/desirable Asian cast/characters on those TV shows. Now, I do like this show “2 broke girls”. I know it’s comedy is suppose to be edgy and I get that and I like that. But it sucks because the Asian diner owner character is a co-star of the show and in each episode, it has some comedy routine devoted to him. I hate watching this portion of the show. makes me cringe and incredibly annoyed.

It just really sucks that the show’s writers chose to use the same old Asian stereotypes cliche content to use it to be funny and ratings and appeal to the masses, who are generally ignorant, stupid, and clueless anyway. Does this mean, this shit still works even today? It’s highly offensive. Reminds me of 16 Candles – long duck dong. and that was almost 30 yrs ago.

I see the Asian character on the tv show as NOT a real character but a caricature…some sort of non-human bafoon/toy/cartoon that is purely there for cheap laughs.

Here are the characteristics of the Mathew Moy character on “2 broke girls”:
shy, lacking confidence, virgin, sexless, very short, likes girls but never dated one, trying hard to fit in with the ‘cool’ kids, too nice, submissive, naive, virgin, fresh off the boat, virgin.

I’ve seen all the 4 episodes thus far and these are the exact words to describe the character.

  12. Z says:

Yes of course it’s very very tiring. It angers me even more that this particular actor decided to accept and play the role. I myself would rather not get the job and not lose my dignity. This actor knows perfectly well what we Asians especially Asian men are stereotypical portrayed as in the media throughout the years going back to the yellow face days and this dude is not helping at all. That’s why I barely watch t.v. anymore and if I do I only watch a handful of shows which include positive representation of Asian characters. I now hover over Youtube and watch Wong Fu productions to Ryan Higa.

  13. Controversial SAM says:

@Z, who is Ryan Higa? I should check that out.

Good points. And as much as I hate this actor…I can’t entirely blame him – he’s a struggling actor with big dreams in hollywood. he’s offered a role in a nationally televised highly desirable TV sitcom on CBS. And he should not take it? it’s hard and I can understand the actor’s POV. it’s a big stage and the opportunities for Asian actors in hollywood are very scarce. I guess I would’ve taken it too. but I would’ve tried to plead with the writers of the show to tone down the Asian stereotypes. begged in fact.

Hey, I watch Law & Order all the time and the moment I think it’s a great show…I recently saw an old episode where the characters in it were Asian gangsters, pimping out their own people, money hungry, corrupted, and the Asian Triad Gangs…..so damn stereotypical! So hollywood in general just sucks the big one!

  14. sunny says:

This constant bashing of the Asian male in Hollywood is becoming almost a sport. I fear for our society just constantly transferring their racial prejudices to a different ethnic group. Yesterday, NPR quoted a study as proofing that the average person on earth is a 28 year old Chinese male. So why all the hate? I just don’t get it, do Asian males pose a threat to white bred Hollywood writers? I kept track for a week, the Asian male bashing was unreal. There was an episode on Castle, where the accused Asian male was proved innocent, but then was spoken to in a patronizing way by the main character and even told “you’re a good boy.” He was in his early 20′s. Imagine a white guy saying that to a black guy in his early 20′s, people would be outraged. Then, there is the blonde on Community who spat on the Asian character multiple times in the one episode I watched. Oh, and then there is Glee, with Michael Chang, we were supposed to be amused when he was just referred to as “Asian guy.” Michael Chang is so hot, that it is just unbelievable that he would ever date the character Tina and I am offended that they were made a couple simply because of race. Also, in recent episodes, the Glee instructors were looking to cast a male romantic lead that could dance. The writers made it a choice between the main guy and two gay guys, Chang was not even put in as a candidate for the romantic lead in the play within the show. Finally, it seems nearly every movie has a version of long duck dong, the Hangover’s portrayal was horrid. Now advertisers are doing the same thing to, several commercials have the Asian male as the punchline character. Not only is it offensive but I fear for my son (Asian/white biracial) and my future grandchildren as to the impact this has on them. I am a white female married to an Asian male.

  15. ControSAM says:

    @sunny
Totally agree with you. You said it! If that same behavior by white was towards a Black man, it’d be a huge scandal and backlash. huge uproar. White people are very very careful when it comes to blacks, especially in the media. But with Asians, it’s on! they feel and do like they can get away with anything. there is little uproar or backlash. it’s a shame that Asians can’t be more politically active.

When I see some racist thing on TV/movies/radio, I take note of it every time, like you. It’s disheartening. I get down by it. cuz it’s so frequent. That thing with “hangover 2″ was just so bad/awful. it’s not funny.

It seems Asians on TV/media/Movie have taken a huge step back. It’s a shame. these things that we saw today are just reincarnations of the old Long duck Dong caricature. Just a different show/movie. same jokes, same sentiment, same punch lines.

It pisses me off when I see this. and it pisses me even more off that other Asians don’t care or are simply apathetic. why? I mention these things to my Asian friends, and they just nod their heads and say, “so?” I get so worked up! It’s f’ed up! why aren’t you guys as angry as I am? why so complacent? it makes us Asian guys look so stuipd and pathetic. why do we have to be the butt of jokes so many times? I swear, if any Asian guy or girl was laughing with the audience in the movie theatre during “hangover 2″, I would’ve been soooo pissed!

  16. JK says:

It is good to see people finally picking up on this, as the same thing happens in the UK but with Indian men.

When an Indian male is shown on TV, he is always comical, geeky and unattractive, while Indian females are kamra sutra sex kittens who only ever want to date white men. There was this one TV drama on the BBC called ‘Mistresses’, which had male and female Indian actors. The female would sleep around, but never once with an Indian male. While the Indian male was married to a white women, but just happened to be infertile. She then has an affair with this ‘Aryan’ white man, who impregnates her, and her Indian husband agrees to raise the child as his own! Then we have Indian male characters in TV soaps, who always turn out to be gay! I mean what are the chances of having an ethnic minority, who then also happens to be gay, on every TV soap?

This is nothing more than social engineering, a friend of mine called it the ‘lion pride principal’, where a lion pride will always accept other females but reject males. They see Asians as a threat, as unlike other immigrants, Asians outperform white people in education and employment, therefore you have to have these negative stereotypes and portrayals.

However white men love Asian women, and want to enforce the idea that being with a white man is a step up, as he is the ‘Alpha male’. I mean look at every Hollywood movie with an Asian actress, why is her love interest always a white man? Why is it that every female Asian newscaster is always on screen with a white male, but Asian men are always on their own?

Keep up the good work, I hope many more people become aware of this subtitle manipulation and then maybe there will be enough of us so that it no longer has any effect.

  17. P Ray says:

You will see more Asian men on Western TV, and with women who AREN’T Asian only when available money is in the hands of Asian men who have the option not to bail out the Western economies.

The idea that Asian women don’t have Asian men’s backs, is something that Asian men have taken a really long time to understand. Book smart, but sure as heck not street-smart.
Remember the gist of what urb4n and VersionBest say: Asian women put down and socially isolate Asian men when overseas or in Western countries, so that the Asian man cannot build a life with women of any other ethnicity.

To women of other ethnicities, realise that your cute Asian female friend, is both going to sex up your male non-Asian friends … as well as make the Asian guy who could be the best thing to happen to you – look like a chump or a deranged psycho.

Every Asian man in a relationship, had better ask whether he chose her … or she “settled” for him.
Because a woman complaining and comparing you to the previous guy, is asking you to compensate for the harm somebody else did to her … while being with you in a relationship where she certainly isn’t giving her best.

A relationship where the man was “settled” for, usually ends up with cuckolding, divorce, or both.

  18. OZFilo SAM says:

    @JK

You ever see the portrayal of the character Raj in the Big Bang Theory? He’s not only a terrible stereotype of Indian men but you could say that he could be representative of Asian males in general within the show.

Look at the elements of this character:
    - hopelessness with women through suffering selective mutism where he cannot talk to a woman unless imbibed with alcohol
    - constantly whining about his loneliness – even more so in the current season
    - tends to have effeminate tendencies; e.g reads female drivel and tries to pass it off as wisdom, displays latent homo behaviours with his best friend as if they’re a couple, and so on
    - portrayed as having that type of male Asian conservatism overbearing attitude when around Asian females that drives them to the more liberal arms of “white” knights
    - physically uninspiring and lacks any sense of style or comportment
    - he has a notionally high IQ and work in the STEM field
    - is obsessed with white women though always fails with them – actually to compound on the pathetic nature of the character, he had a chance to score with the main white woman on the show and instead of showing any hint of Asian male virility he was shown as failure by being too quick off the mark

  19. Mary Hart says:

@JK, actually you bring up an interesting point regarding Indian men and the way they are portrayed in the UK. That show “Big Bang Theory” has that Indian guy who’s a nerd, geeky, not confident, and a loser with girls. But his sister shows up from India and starts banging the white character on the show, and she’s hot, sexy, and HOT! So good point. It also happens here too I guess.

But it seems like the way Indian men are portrayed in the UK media IS very identical to the way Asian men are portrayed in American TV/movies. It’s pathetic you know and annoys me. We, as Asian men, should be in an uproar by it. Why does the white male always come out on top? Oh yeah, probably cuz the media is controlled by whites. duh.

So in your example, the lion pride is basically ‘controlled’ by the whites? I see. that sucks! And even though I agree that they can view Asian men as threats, the top elites, the ones who really control society, have the power, money, the top 1% are almost all white. So at the very end of the day, they are in control. But I guess that’s why they have the power and ability to weed out any Asians they seem as threats. f’ed up!

Yup, I agree – the white man always comes out as the winner. they are always portrayed as saving the day. And the asian women are like trophies. It’s the result of years and years of imperialism and colonialism.

When I watched “Avatar”, which I hated…I thought, “ah! another movie where the white man comes into the foreign land/tribe….gets it on with the native girl, has sex with her, and basically saves the day!” wow, i hate that movie.

  20. Angelina Jolie says:

@PRay, good points. wow, that is astounding. I do agree to a degree. but question: how do you think Asian women socially isolate and put down Asian men?

  21. Kermit says:

    @OZFilo SAM
Yup, I watched that show from its very inception and I know Raj and his hot sister. And she ends up banging the white nerd on that show. she sleeps around but Raj is girl-less and pathetic. I hate that part of the show. I”m not Indian (i’m Korean) but it annoys me when I saw that storyline. Great show but that story sucks. It’s like the “2 broke girls” show – great show but the Asian aspect of it is horrible and disgusting to me.

  22. P Ray says:

Simple (A bit of a ramble, props if you get through it).

Let’s start with the idea that females are quicker to make friends with other females than males.

Then you get the idea that a female of Asian ethnicity has the “inside track of all males from Asia”(yes, some women put themselves across as this kind of authority).

Next, you have your psychology textbook that says “Way back in China, women were footbound” and “Way back in India, women were burnt to death with their husbands”.

The Asian guy becomes the whipping boy in both scenarios, probably because Western-centric psychology and manbashing doesn’t want to alienate Saudi oil by pointing out what they do. Or even what present-day local Caucasian/Black jackasses do. Take a look in your local jail cell, for an example. See how many people are in it for domestic violence. (Men AND women – since domestic violence is perpetrated by both genders). Next, note how many are Asian men or women (Catherine Kieu Becker is a recent example).

Still stack up with the Asian girls’ version of reality? If no, consider the below paragraph.

Mix those together, along with ominous warning from Asian girls “You better watch out, these Asian men are SO sexist and controlling”. Not to mention, these are the selfsame girls that try to parade around for free help and grades-inflation by trying to hook up with TA’s. Yes, seen that. So, from the start, any Asian guy you are with, you have been poisoned against them, so that anything they do, is seen as “sexist and controlling”. Doesn’t bode well for the relationship.

    My reply? Em, no.
The rise of equality has made it impossible for a family to exist on a single, average income.
That’s why when I hear someone tell me “Women belong in the kitchen!”(Caucasian guys, surprise surprise! and “Traditional” women thinking their endorsement is going to turn back the situation of equality that currently exists), I reply back: “Women belong EVERYWHERE! You can’t reliably build a sustainable lifestyle where only one person in a family is working”.

  23. JK says:

Thanks for the replies OZFilo SAM and Mary Hart. I have seen The Big Bang Theory, but stopped watching once I saw how the Raj character was portrayed. And in Avatar (an Indian word!), the main character becomes the king of the people! There is also the whole mixing of the genes, taking all the benefits of that race by genetic diversification but excluding the male Y gene.

This thing is an epidemic, and not many people see how TV and movies have these hidden messages that attempt to shape our perception in such a warped way, even I had someone else point it out to me first. The other big meme I see is the constant effeminate males and masculine females, and I am sure there are others which I haven’t picked up on yet.

All we can really do is try to tell others about it, I’ll be happy if just one person reads my comment and it helps them uncover all this.

P Ray, the funny thing is that the women’s ‘liberation’ movement was all about giving women the ‘choice’ to work or not work, but because of them there is no choice but to work, while leaving your children in the care of Mr TV. There were many more prominent and successful women before this nonsense, as they made it though ability, dedication and perseverance.

Movements don’t just crop up, they are well funded and given publicity, and you can see that the only people to gain from it were the leaders of industry who wanted cheap labour, and those who want children indoctrinated by all this social engineering in the media. After female labour was exhausted, they started bringing over immigrants. Any movement (truth, war, anti-capital) parading around as something which is for your benefit, is ultimately a Trojan horse .

  24. Luke says:

Everyday I wonder when will Hollywood start being impartial towards Asian men.
It isn’t right and it isn’t fair that they’ve damaged Asian men’s reputation greatly!
Asian men need to start banding together, unite for the greater cause of protecting the Asian man’s dignity!

  25. K Takaki says:

Like I said before. They need to get sexy ass muscular, multi-talented, manly Mr. Will Yun Lee in there fucking the brains out of those two girls.

  26. WaiSouGlum says:

    @sunny

great points and excellent way to point it all out.

Just to comment i hope everybody can keep in mind that this is still American media so while it isn’t right to be doing any of this, it doesn’t mean they are alone. Like what was said about Indians in the UK. (btw I’ve seen some crappy Chinese portrayals there too lol)

But my point is that all media is going to be biased and I do kinda agree tht it is social modification. I’ve been reading lots about how people take Asian men these days and besides typical white chicks in America that are informed only by these kinds of shows there’s a huge rise to favoring them for relationships and seeing them as cream of the crop material. tbh if that wasn’t the case there’d be no point to the “small penises” “dominant male culture” “favoring the son” or any of that crap because if girls in America weren’t interested in them anyway none of that would factor into it but its cuz girls are really taking a look at Asian guys that the alarm bells started to ring and all this get them away from the Asian man stereotyping took flight. Otherwise we’d still be at all Asians know kungfu. Actually the modified version of that these days is that all Asians ONLY know kung fu. I don’t remember a single Jackie Chan movie in the states that has him sweettalk his way through high security areas or make an asshat out of some idiot flaunting his nonskills. No its usually Jackie’s high flying super monkey matrix moves that get him through obstacles +/- some comedy in the mix.

That brings me to the next thing I wanted to say and that’s I saw that Castle ep too. WTF! That was my reaction the whole way through. First like you said horrible way to acknowledge the poor kid. But then it gets worse. (yeah i know I kept saying them them them but I’m an Asian male too lol) And cuz of that I know that none of those names made sense. Seriously is ABC lost about Chinese names? I mean it isn’t that hard. Hell even Han Lee would have been better than what they came up with some freakish Korean japanese malaysian hybrid name. lol What was worse was that staring you in the face with those names, none of the last names matched! What the hell kinda pod people family were those stereotypical Cantonese Triad gangsters? lol And here I thought last season’s Ung Kew was bad. The last straw was right at the end when Castle tells Ben he’ll do well in stunt acting. I love Nathan Fillion and love his portrayal of Rick Castle. I still love Castle and can’t wait to watch the rest of season 4 but OMG did I wanna punch him there. It sounded like a brush off like this poor silent shy Asian kid can only ever pull off stunt work even though he gave the performance of his life (literally) in that scene. Seriously how much stunt work did he do by yelling at his brother and getting fake shot? I’d say the big money went to how dramatic he made it all which ended up driving his brother’s confession and all Castle can applaud him for is the split second it took him to whip out a gun and get shot?

    Sorry venting there.

So then we get onto the why don’t Asians pitch a fit like blacks would if that same thing happened to them and why the typical response to this stuff is “so?” I have to admit I do that too but you know I think that’s just cuz Asians by nature just don’t care about this kinda stuff. I vented sure but how often do you see that? I mean Al Sharpton is on tv like every other day about the “heinous treatment of blacks” but Asians don’t really like that most of the time. But we’re getting better about it! More blogs are cropping up and more stories are being told like Danny Chen.

I am glad that the stereotyping media doesn’t transfer too well on Chinese media but then again only business tycoons and sophisticated aristocratic whites gets really boring. lol Ooooh Christian Bale is starring in the new Zhang Yimou movie The Flowers of War though. Should be really good.

  27. AsianNerd says:

Why do people even watch this kind of TV?

This asian comedian appears to fit all the negative stereotypes.
To worsen the circumstances and to magnify the contrast, he is portrayed with two porn-style chicks. As if to say he is wandering into forbidden territory.
This dangerous portraying of people is typical of American media where there is absolutely no depth in those characters outside of the pimping of those villains.
The porn-style look is also a stereotype used to overshadow everything else. It conveys the idea that to look like a porn star is the quintessence of every woman… Thus, even if the Asian characters are removed, the show does not get better.

The older forms of blatant racism against the asian people have been replaced by more subtle forms of racism.

Racism towards the asian male is diametrically opposite to racism towards the female to the point that the latter form is not much discernible. This is extremely disrespectful towards a group of people who are not asking or begging anything from their country.

If people want to laugh at asian geeks they can just watch asian dramas. They are less shallow, hilarious, positive and much more rewarding.
